October 17-21, 2011 XIX Provincial Synod of the Anglican Catholic Church

The Bishops, Clergy, and Layity of the Original Province of the Anglican Catholic Church met October 17-18 (College of Bishops) and October 19-21 (Synod) for the XIX Synod of the Church. The Synod conducted the normal business of the Synod by accepting and approving the Provincial Budget and receiving reports from Provincial departments and from Bishops from around the world.

Provincial appointments by Archbishop Haverland included Fr. Michael Weaver (The Church of the Ascension) as Deputy Bursar (Missionary Society of St. Paul), Mrs. Debbie Weaver (Ascension) as Provincial Secretary, and Fr. Dennis Sossi (St. Peter's) as Provincial Registrar. Elections during the synod included Col. (Ret.) G. Hork Dimon (Ascension) as Deputy Speaker of the House of the Laity, Fr. Weaver as Recorder of the Senate of the Clergy, Fr. Don Poff (St. Athanasius) to the Provincial Court, and Archdeacon C. Thomas McHenry (St. Stephen's) as Prolocutor of the Senate of the Clergy.

The College of Bishops also announced the election of the Rev. Donald Lerow (Diocese of the South) as bishop elect to the Military Ordinariate with their intent to name him as Episcopal Visitor to the Diocese of the Mid-Atlantic States and giving him full authority of a Bishop Ordinary. The College also announced their desire for the DMAS to eventually elect bishop elect Lerow as Ordinary and that the College would retain the right to appoint a bishop for the diocese at a later date if that becomes necessary.

June 16-18, 2011 - DMAS Electoral and Annual Synods

The Clerical and Lay Delegates of the Diocese of the Mid-Atlantic States met on June 16 through the 18th to conduct the business of the Annual and Electoral Synods.  Activities began at 5pm on June 16th with the convening Mass which also included the Blessing of the Oils.

On the morning of June 17th, the Diocesan Synod was seated and recessed and the Electoral Synod convened by the President of the Electoral Synod, The Most Rev. Mark Haverland, Metropolitan and Archbishop of the Original Province of the Anglican Catholic Church.  With no election after 8 ballots, the Synod moved to elect by postulation.  Election by postulation means that the Electoral Synod concedes and assigns its authority and duty to elect for the office of Bishop to the Metropolitan and his College of Bishops and that such election will constitute a true and valid election. (The next meeting of the College of Bishops is scheduled for October 17-18, 2011 in West Palm Beach, FL.)

The Annual Diocesan Synod reconvened and conducted its business of committee reports and the passing of the annual budget.  The Synod also issued several resolutions:

·         To Archbishop Haverland, to thank him for taking of his time and serving as the President of the Electoral Synod.

·         To Bishop McClean and St. Anne’s Parish (Charlotte Hall, MD) for hosting the dual synods and to Father Michael and Debbie Weaver for assisting to organize the proceedings.

·         To honor the passing of Admiral Frank Haak and to remember his work within our diocese and in the Anglican Catholic Church from their beginnings.

·         The Synod also issued a resolution to honor and thank the Right Rev. William McClean, Jr. for his service to the diocese as its 5th Bishop Ordinary.

At the Synod Banquet, the Diocese presented Bishop McClean with a silver plate in thanks for his service.  Bishop McClean was also presented a very generous love offering from the parishes and people of the Diocese.  Archbishop Haverland announced that Bishop McClean had agreed to continue his service to the Diocese, now in the role of Episcopal Visitor, until a new bishop is elected, consecrated and enthroned.
